“One summer vacation was supposed to bring a baby, but instead, the womb opened and a cry was heard. In the wilds of Mandre, it was not clear whether it was the cry of a man or a jackal, or a prisoner or the cry of unborn child. The cry of the past that does not calm down, the cry of stray bullets from the 90s that still wander and hit the closest ones. It all becomes one cry. Collective and personal. Images that we cannot get rid of scream inside us and become our personality, biography, character, anger. Loneliness and isolation produce destruction and hatred. The idyllic Mediterranean cape becomes a space of anxiety, death, intolerance, becomes a prison and then a camp. This is a piece about a heart full of hate. About the weapon waiting at the bottom of the chest. And the weapon is always waiting for only one thing, to kill. Everything will be killed except for the light of the lighthouse… the hope that one day some ship will come guided by the light, or that they will realise that there is no need to dock here and continue on. But the light will remain, the rhythm will remain, and the rhythm gives life. To some new Adam and Eve. The life will remain”, it was written in the director’s notebook.
The novel “Beneath the Two Suns” was written by Montenegrin writer Ognjen Spahić at the request of the Royal Theatre, and was published in 2020.
